Masahiro Sakurai, creator of the Super Smash Bros. series, recently detailed the origins of the franchise on his YouTube channel. Following his work on Kirby Super Star, Sakurai proposed two Nintendo 64 projects to an independent 3D studio, one of which was a four-player brawler titled Dragon King: The Fighting Game.

The prototype for Dragon King lacked many staples of the final series, such as special moves, dodging mechanics, or items. However, it established core concepts like stage design and the objective of knocking opponents off the map.

Sakurai aimed to create a fighting game focused on improvisation rather than the complex, combo-heavy strategies common in the genre. He prioritized intuitive, simple controls to differentiate the experience from traditional titles.

Although Nintendo initially resisted the idea of its iconic characters fighting one another, the company approved the project after testing the prototype. While other concepts were discarded, Dragon King eventually evolved into the Super Smash Bros. series known today.
