Released May 21 for Windows PC, Zero Parades: For Dead Spies is the latest isometric RPG from ZA/UM. The game follows Cascade, a disgraced spy returning to the site of a past failure. Critics note that its structure mirrors Mass Effect 2, focusing on recruiting a crew for a high-stakes suicide mission.
The gameplay centers on gathering allies, with the narrative emphasizing ensemble dynamics and personal histories. Players must navigate complex relationships, such as the story of Ramses, a former crew member whose life was ruined by Cascade’s past actions. These interactions are described as more intimate than those found in the studio's previous title, Disco Elysium.
Mechanically, the game revolves around loyalty-style missions, where players must reconcile the fact that Cascade is often a tool for powerful interests. Unlike Mass Effect 2, which allows for larger team assignments, Zero Parades limits the final mission party to three members. This restriction forces players to manage internal group strife and make difficult ethical choices regarding who to send into potential death.
While the game is not the canceled Mass Effect: Universe, it succeeds by exploring moral ambiguity within the spy genre. Console versions are currently planned for November, extending the reach of this critically acclaimed title.
