Creative Assembly and publisher SEGA have suspended sales of Total War: Shogun 2 - Complete Edition following an overwhelmingly negative reception on Steam. The title, which launched on the 14th, faced immediate criticism regarding its technical state, leading Vice President Roger Collum to issue a formal apology for failing to meet the company's quality standards.
The Complete Edition aimed to bundle the 2011 original with all DLC while enhancing visuals and adding language support. However, users reported significant performance issues, pervasive bugs, and incompatibility with existing mods. Additionally, some players criticized the Chinese translation as being of poor machine-translated quality, while others noted concerns regarding AI-upscaled graphics.
Roger Collum attributed the failure to the decision to outsource development while internal teams focused on other projects, resulting in a lack of internal review or QA oversight. While Collum clarified that the studio maintains a policy against using AI for game assets, he acknowledged that the company bears full responsibility for the product regardless of the development structure.
As of October 15, the original version of the game has been restored to Steam for purchase. While those who already bought the Complete Edition may continue to play, the studio is currently investigating the release. Future plans involve collaborating with SEGA and external partners to address the situation, though specific details remain unconfirmed.
