Valve has moved to address user requests for external optical drive support on the Steam Frame headset. Following a forum post by user Aiodensghost on Oct. 18 regarding the inability to play movies or install older software, a Valve developer named gaberowe responded within one day to confirm the company would investigate the issue.
The developer implemented the change in under 10 minutes by pushing commit b68e4a1 to the deckard-linux-no-oopsies GitHub repository. This update enables a pre-existing Linux kernel feature within the SteamOS ARM source code, rather than requiring the creation of an entirely new system from scratch.
While this commit suggests potential future support, it does not guarantee the feature will appear in the next official software update. Users who prefer not to wait may choose to build and install the modified kernel themselves to enable direct disc reading on the device.
Although the Steam Frame is primarily a streaming device, this addition could allow standalone usage for physical media. However, practical application may prove awkward, as users would need to manage external hardware connections while wearing the headset.
