Key information
Mexican developer Roberto, known as Novemtails, released his first-person forest survival game Under Canopies on Steam Early Access on October 23. This project represents his first solo commercial release, developed over a period of nearly four years with the support of his nine cats.
The game emphasizes a relaxed pace, allowing players to construct cabins, craft furniture, and decorate their homes. Players can cultivate gardens and utilize over 30 recipes to prepare meals. Exploration is central to the experience, as players gather resources, discover hidden locations, and document wildlife like sheep, bees, and chickens in a journal to earn their trust.
While the game features survival mechanics such as hunger, thirst, stamina, and temperature, the developer clarifies that it is not a hardcore survival title. There are no combat or hunting elements, animals cannot be killed, and players cannot die. Roberto intends for the game to provide a safe environment where players can progress at their own pace.
The developer has outlined a roadmap toward the 1.0 version, which will introduce a photography studio, a new companion, and canoes for exploration. Future updates will also include food preservation mechanics, expanded cooking options, and a subterranean area to conclude the forest narrative. Roberto acknowledges that as a solo project, the game currently contains bugs and unfinished features, which he plans to address through ongoing updates.
