American speedrunner Niftski has reclaimed the world record for the Any% category in Super Mario Bros. on the NES. During a live Twitch broadcast, he achieved a time of 4 minutes, 54 seconds, and 482 milliseconds. This performance surpasses the previous record held by average11, who had previously ended Niftski's four-year reign with a time of 4 minutes, 54 seconds, and 56 milliseconds.
The run was described as nearly perfect, though Niftski missed the entrance to a pipe in level 8-4, resulting in the loss of two frames. Experts in the community note that current human-achieved times are now within 15 frames of the theoretical perfect time, bringing them remarkably close to the performance levels of computer-assisted speedruns known as TAS.
Super Mario Bros. remains a highly competitive title, with over 2,000 players listed on Speedrun.com and more than 10,000 recorded attempts. In this environment, competitive margins are often measured in mere fractions of a second.
Niftski is a dominant figure in the NES Mario scene, currently holding the top position in every category for the original Super Mario Bros. on Speedrun.com. He also holds world records across all three categories for the game known as Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels and maintains a competitive 11th-place ranking in the Super Mario Bros. 3 Any% No Wrong Warp category.
