Bloober Team, the developer behind the Silent Hill 2 Remake, has expressed a strong commitment to maintaining physical game releases for as long as possible. This stance comes despite the industry's ongoing transition toward digital-only distribution and Sony's reported plan to cease manufacturing PlayStation game discs by January 2028.
Piotr Babieno, the studio's CEO, acknowledged in an interview with GamesRadar that digital distribution offers significant economic advantages, including lower costs and higher profitability. However, he emphasized that physical media provides a unique emotional connection between the studio and its players that cannot be replicated through digital downloads alone.
Tymon Smektala, director of the studio's publishing arm, Broken Mirror Games, shares this perspective. Both executives view themselves as collectors who believe that physical boxes and related items are integral to the gaming experience, hoping to preserve this tradition as long as industry conditions allow.
The studio successfully released the Silent Hill 2 Remake in 2024 with a physical edition for PS5. While they are currently developing a remake of the original Silent Hill, it remains uncertain whether this title will reach retail shelves before the 2028 deadline set by Sony.
