Developer Sammy Hajhamid has released a software-based jailbreak method called ns2jb for the Nintendo Switch 2. By exploiting vulnerabilities within the legacy programming software SmileBASIC 4, Hajhamid successfully executed non-native code on the new console. This exploit allowed for the integration of unofficial characters, such as those from Chiikawa, into Mario Kart World.

The ns2jb method functions by leveraging flaws in SmileBASIC 4 when running in the console's backward compatibility mode, combined with weaknesses in system file services. Hajhamid utilized OpenAI's Codex tool to identify these vulnerabilities. The process, which does not require hardware modifications, is compatible with Switch 2 units running firmware version 23.0.1.

Current capabilities remain limited, as the exploit is a tethered jailbreak requiring re-execution upon reboot. It does not grant kernel-level access or support permanent custom firmware. Furthermore, Nintendo’s user agreement reserves the right to permanently disable consoles that circumvent security measures, posing potential risks to users.

Following the disclosure, SmileBASIC 4 was removed from the Nintendo eShop in Japan, North America, and Europe. While the timing coincides with the exploit's release, Nintendo has not officially confirmed the reason for the removal, and developer SmileBoom has issued no public statement regarding the software's status.
