A widespread PHP security vulnerability recently caused service disruptions for various platforms, including Square Enix's Final Fantasy 14. Because the MMO utilizes real-world timers for in-game gardening, players who were unable to log in feared their virtual plants would wither during the outage.

To address this, active players organized a communal aid network to assist those locked out of the game. Users on platforms like Reddit and X offered free watering services, utilizing a game mechanic that allows any player to water plants located at other users' homes without special requirements.

Square Enix resolved the PHP issues after approximately 24 hours, allowing players to resume normal access. The developer confirmed that the short duration of the outage meant no plants should have died during the period of restricted logins.

While the game is back online, Square Enix noted that the temporary pause on housing auto-demolition will conclude. This system, which reclaims inactive plots due to the game's non-instanced housing limitations, is scheduled to resume on Oct. 26.
