During the 1990s, the Japanese role-playing game genre experienced a golden age, yet European players missed many masterpieces. While the Super Nintendo and Mega Drive hosted iconic titles in Japan and the United States, several never officially crossed European borders due to high localization costs and the genre's limited popularity at the time.

Super Nintendo titles like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI revolutionized the genre with dynamic combat and ambitious narratives. Other games introduced unique mechanics, such as Bahamut Lagoon’s military strategy and dragon-rearing, or Tales of Phantasia’s real-time combat. EarthBound stood out for its absurd humor and contemporary setting, contrasting with traditional medieval themes.

Mega Drive exclusives also challenged conventions. Langrisser II offered tactical warfare, while Rent a Hero utilized a humorous, contemporary premise. Madou Monogatari I focused on dungeon exploration, King Colossus featured real-time action, and Surging Aura introduced a distinct magic-casting system. These titles were often praised by enthusiasts for their originality and technical prowess.

Many of these games remained inaccessible for decades. However, through official modern console re-releases and amateur fan translations, several classics eventually reached European audiences. These titles are now regarded as significant parts of gaming history, either as highly acclaimed RPGs or as sought-after curiosities for collectors.
