Former Nintendo of America employees Kit and Krysta recently shared that a Saturday Night Live sketch featuring Elon Musk as Wario was poorly received by the company. The segment, which aired five years ago, depicted a courtroom scene involving the murder of Mario.
The sketch included jokes regarding drug use and Luigi's anatomy, content that employees felt conflicted with the brand image Nintendo typically projects. Krysta Yang noted that the portrayal did not sit well with staff, who viewed the performance as an unprovoked and distasteful attack.
According to former staff member Ellis, the appearance was unexpected as there were no Mario or Wario games in development at the time. Employees were reportedly confused by the casting choice, and the specific subject matter caused discomfort within the organization.
While this instance caused friction, Nintendo characters have appeared on the program on other occasions. More recently, the show featured a segment comparing the upcoming releases of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake and Grand Theft Auto VI.
