As the November 19, 2026, release date for Grand Theft Auto VI approaches, Rockstar Games has publicly addressed the emotional impact of the significant leaks that plagued the title's development. The studio experienced a major security breach in 2022 via a phishing attack, which granted unauthorized access to internal Slack channels and exposed early, unfinished gameplay footage to the public.

Artist Aaron Garbut described the experience of seeing unfinished work exposed as an incredibly strange intrusion, comparing it to someone rummaging through one's dirty laundry. He noted that the situation was difficult to manage emotionally, as the team saw their early, private efforts displayed in a state that was never intended for public viewing.

The leaks initially revealed early clips of protagonists Jason and Lucia in poor quality. While Rockstar confirmed the breach and eventually identified the responsible party, the incident caused lasting frustration. Some of these leaked scenes have since been recreated in the final version of the game, allowing observers to track the project's evolution over the last four years.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar Games has recently begun sharing official details regarding the game's climate system, fast travel, and various locations. Currently, the developer has not announced a version for PC, with the title arriving over thirteen years after its predecessor.
