The Tomb Raider franchise marks its 30th anniversary, reflecting on a history that helped define 3D adventure gaming. First released in Spain on October 24, 1996, the original title by Core Design was celebrated for its freedom of movement, graphics, and mysterious exploration of ancient sites, establishing Lara Croft as a gaming icon.

Technically, the original game was a feat for its time, featuring novel 3D animations and an effective camera system. Developers faced unique challenges, such as attaching Lara's ponytail directly to her body model to avoid animation difficulties. Over decades, the series evolved through hardware advancements, incorporating motion capture, climbing mechanics, and improved puzzles while maintaining its core focus on exploration.

The series underwent significant shifts, including the 2013 reboot, which introduced a more vulnerable, emotionally grounded version of Lara. Crystal Dynamics originally considered a survival horror tone for this reboot, featuring giant creatures, before settling on the successful survival-focused direction that defined the modern trilogy.

With over 100 million games sold, the franchise continues to grow. Fans look forward to the upcoming reimagining, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, scheduled for release on February 12, 2027, which aims to revisit the series' origins using modern technology.
