Over a period spanning between 11 and 5 years ago, GTA Online players frequently requested the addition of illuminated, color-changing tires for their vehicles. While these requests were often dismissed as absurd by others, the concept was rooted in actual automotive history rather than pure fantasy.
The desire for glowing wheels was bolstered by a glitch in the game that allowed for flickering light effects within tires. Despite community interest and various tutorials, Rockstar never officially implemented light-up tires, limiting customization options to rim colors and tire smoke.
In reality, Goodyear developed illuminated tires during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Chemists William Larson and Anthony Finelli utilized a polyurethane compound called neotane to create tires capable of glowing. These prototypes featured internal bulbs to produce an electroluminescent effect.
According to The Drive, these tires never reached the commercial market. However, Goodyear revisited the concept in 2019 while restoring the Golden Sahara II vehicle, proving that the aesthetic requested by GTA Online players had a legitimate historical precedent.
