On October 23, System Era Softworks announced the layoff of over 30 staff members. The affected personnel, spanning roles such as artists, designers, engineers, producers, writers, and QA, will receive severance packages and support from the studio. The Seattle-based developer, acquired by Devolver Digital in 2023, is known for the sandbox title Astroneer.

Marketing Director Joe Tirado stated that the layoffs were prompted by the underwhelming performance of the spin-off title Starseeker: Astroneer Expeditions. While the game has attracted hundreds of thousands of players since its early access launch in June 2026, it failed to meet the studio's expectations.

The title currently holds a Mixed status on Steam with a 55% approval rating from 821 reviews. Players have criticized the game for its mandatory multiplayer focus, which prevents solo play, and for its gameplay differences compared to the original Astroneer. Consequently, the studio is reducing its size to a sustainable scale, though it remains committed to reaching a 1.0 release.

Despite these challenges, development on Starseeker: Astroneer Expeditions continues, with further roadmap details expected soon. The studio is also beginning internal discussions regarding its 2027 plans. The game is currently available in early access on PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, as well as through PC and Xbox Game Pass.
