YoYo Games officially announced that its next-generation GameMaker Runtime, known as GMRT, will be free for commercial use. This policy change is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027.

GMRT serves as the successor to the GMS2 Runtime, aiming to provide enhanced performance, improved compatibility with modern tools, and expanded 3D capabilities. The runtime has been in open beta since July 2024.

Under the new terms, developers can create and distribute PC and mobile titles using GMRT without cost. However, console distribution will still require an enterprise plan subscription. Developers using the GMS2 Runtime may continue commercial distribution if they hold a professional plan or higher.

Russell Kay, head of GameMaker, described this shift as the beginning of a fresh chapter. The initiative aligns with the company's ongoing efforts to make game development more accessible and flexible for creators worldwide.
