Helen Chiang, the first chief operating officer for Xbox, is leaving Microsoft today after a 21-year tenure at the company. Her departure was confirmed through an internal memo authored by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma.

The COO position was established only months ago in July as part of a broader organizational reset. The role was designed to provide end-to-end profit and loss responsibility across hardware, content, services, and platforms.

While the company has not disclosed the reasons for her exit, the sudden nature of the announcement and the immediate redistribution of her duties among other leaders have fueled speculation regarding the circumstances. Microsoft vice president of communications Kari Perez declined to comment on the specific situation, citing company policy regarding personnel matters.

Chiang previously served as the head of Minecraft before her promotion to the newly created executive role. Future plans regarding the COO leadership position remain unfinalized, though the company indicated that more information will be shared in due course.
