Following the release of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, director Satoru Nihei stated that Capcom is satisfied with the game's difficulty level. Analysis of player data indicates that the challenge aligns with the developer's original goals, allowing users to progress through the story while still encountering moments of defeat and friction that provide a sense of satisfaction.
While some players initially expressed concerns that the game was too easy compared to titles like Sekiro or Nioh, Nihei clarified that the team never intended to create an exceptionally difficult experience. Hardcore action fans have noted that the higher difficulty setting is locked until the campaign is completed, leading some to utilize community-made mods to increase enemy aggression.
PC Gamer's review highlighted that while the swordplay is enjoyable, the game suffers from repetitive boss encounters and generic sidequests. Nihei acknowledged this feedback, explaining that the team aimed to create engaging encounters for repeated play, though he admitted that a greater variety of bosses would have been preferable.
Regarding the game's scope, Capcom intentionally targeted a 20-hour experience to avoid the length of 40-hour-plus open-world titles. The developers prioritized a mostly linear structure supplemented by optional exploration, a design choice intended to provide sufficient volume without dragging out the experience.
