Legendary Nintendo developer Shigeru Miyamoto recently addressed the impact of generative AI on the gaming industry. Speaking during a press conference regarding his upcoming Order of Culture award, Miyamoto suggested that while technology evolves, human talent remains essential to the creative process.
Miyamoto compared the rise of AI to previous technological shifts, such as the transition from typewriters to word processors. He argued that as tools handle more labor-intensive tasks, designers have the opportunity to focus on what is truly important, noting that work lacking individual design intention rarely stands the test of time.
Despite the potential for AI to manage various production duties, Miyamoto maintains that there will always be a role for human developers. This perspective contrasts with other industry figures, such as Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai, who expressed concerns that AI could lead to a rise in unoriginal, unprofitable content.
While Nintendo has not explicitly banned AI, former Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser previously emphasized the importance of the human touch in their titles. This approach differs from companies like Square Enix, Sega, and Capcom, which have shown more openness toward integrating generative AI tools into their development pipelines.
