Sony has officially ceased shipments of the UBP-X700/K in Japan as of October 22. This device served as the company's final standalone 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player within the region. Following the end of shipments, remaining inventory on the official Japanese store was depleted rapidly, and the manufacturer has not announced any plans for a successor.
The discontinued model, which launched on May 17, 2025, was a stripped-down iteration of the 2018 UBP-X700, notably lacking streaming applications. It was last priced at ¥58,300. While Sony continues to offer the BDP-S1700/K, that unit is restricted to standard Blu-ray playback capabilities.
The PlayStation 5 now stands as the sole Sony product in Japan capable of playing 4K Blu-ray discs. However, enthusiasts note that the console is an imperfect replacement; unlike the UBP-X700/K, the PS5 does not support Dolby Vision, though it does handle HDR10.
This move aligns with Sony's broader strategy to exit the disc hardware market, having previously announced the phase-out of Blu-ray recorders in February. With new PlayStation games set to stop shipping on physical media starting January 2028, the future of disc support remains uncertain. While the current player exit is localized to Japan, industry observers suggest the standalone player business may face similar declines globally.
