Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto is set to receive the Order of Culture, Japan's highest cultural honor, becoming the first video game developer to achieve this recognition. The award, which acknowledges significant contributions to cultural development, will be presented by the Emperor of Japan.
Miyamoto, who joined Nintendo in 1977, was instrumental in the company's shift toward video game production. Beyond creating the Mario franchise, he played key roles in developing The Legend of Zelda and Star Fox series. He currently serves as a Representative Director and Executive Fellow at the company.
Reflecting on the honor, Miyamoto expressed feeling both humbled and honored. He emphasized that the award represents collective effort rather than individual achievement, noting his recent collaborations on projects like Super Nintendo World and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
The ceremony is scheduled for November 3, Japan's Culture Day, where the Emperor will honor Miyamoto alongside seven other recipients. Miyamoto attributed his success to his long tenure in the industry, stating he feels fortunate to have worked in the field since its early, undefined stages.
