Electronic Arts recently closed BioWare, resulting in the cancellation of the project internally referred to as Mass Effect: Universe. While the studio's closure led to staff layoffs, an internal trailer featuring pre-production assets surfaced shortly after, providing a glimpse into the abandoned title.
The game was envisioned as a departure from the series' traditional large-scale warfare, focusing instead on a galactic Cold War. The narrative would have been set over 600 years following the Reaper War, establishing connections between the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies while featuring three distinct power factions: an alliance of humans, Krogans, and Batarians; a coalition of Council races; and the Geth.
Players would have controlled a customizable N7 agent described as a blend of John Wick and James Bond. Gameplay was designed around handcrafted missions offering Hitman-style freedom, supported by experimental technology that allowed for environmental manipulation, hacking, and identifying systems through walls.
These details, attributed to YouTuber Dantics via a Kotaku report, suggest the inclusion of brutal close-range executions and squadmates capable of interpersonal conflict. Although these claims remain unverified by official sources, they offer insight into the development direction before the project's termination.
