A potential partnership between Netflix and Xbox regarding the exclusive adaptation of gaming properties into film and television content has reportedly collapsed. According to Puck News, Netflix initially proposed a $500 million deal to secure these rights for a seven-year period.
The negotiations stalled after Xbox leadership, including CEO Asha Sharma, countered with an $800 million demand. This higher valuation was ultimately rejected by Netflix executives, including CFO Spence Neumann, who deemed the price tag unjustifiable for the proposed licensing arrangement.
Despite the failure of this broader agreement, the two companies maintain an active working relationship. Current collaborations include animated series based on Minecraft and Diablo, alongside a live-action film adaptation of the Gears of War franchise.
Xbox confirmed that it continues to receive significant interest in its intellectual property and intends to pursue smaller, individual licensing deals moving forward. Meanwhile, other major studios are actively developing adaptations for various Xbox-owned brands, such as Amazon's work on Fallout and Paramount's project involving Call of Duty.
