Rockstar Games experienced a difficult phase during the development of Grand Theft Auto 6 between 2019 and 2022. According to developers, this period was marked by the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing struggle to balance the title's realistic elements with its signature absurd, fun gameplay.
The game incorporates systems from Red Dead Redemption 2, emphasizing realism through photorealistic graphics and advanced wanted-level mechanics. Developers experimented extensively with alternatives to the traditional weapon wheel, testing various designs like webs and trays for years. Ultimately, the team reverted to the standard weapon wheel for the final product.
Art director Aaron Garbut noted that the team intentionally designed narrower roads and denser traffic to reflect American transport, which necessitated the creation of additional buildings. Developers were granted autonomy to implement minor, independent details, similar to the dynamic horse testicle system found in Red Dead Redemption 2, leading to a world so complex that no single person fully comprehends every feature.
Despite these development hurdles and concerns regarding potential leaks or piracy, Grand Theft Auto 6 has already reached a $600 million milestone in pre-orders.
