Recent reports suggest a cancelled Mass Effect project, titled Mass Effect Universe, aimed to shift the franchise's focus from large-scale galactic warfare toward covert operations and espionage. The game was reportedly set 600 years following the Reaper War, featuring a narrative centered on a galactic cold war.

According to content creator Dantics, who participated in a community feedback group for BioWare, players would control a customizable N7 agent. This protagonist was designed to rely on cunning and a limited arsenal, with Dantics comparing the gameplay experience to a blend of John Wick and James Bond.

The setting featured significant technological advancements and rebuilt fast-travel relays. Three major power blocs emerged in the post-Reaper era: a coalition of Council races, a faction uniting humanity with Krogans and Batarians, and the Geth, who were constructing superstructures to bridge the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies.

These details emerged following news regarding EA's restructuring of BioWare. While Commander Shepard's legacy remained preserved, the project intended to move the series into a new era of shadow-based conflict and tactical, character-focused encounters.
