A widespread security vulnerability in the PHP programming language recently disrupted numerous websites, including the MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV. Square Enix responded to the situation by suspending login servers on October 21, preventing many users from accessing the game.
The outage created complications for players who could not tend to their in-game housing, specifically the gardening system. Crops like thavnairian onions require consistent care and take five full days to mature, meaning they would perish without regular watering.
According to PC Gamer, a Reddit post titled "PHP Watering Service" emerged to address this issue. Players who remained logged in, including console users and those already AFK, volunteered to visit the plots of locked-out users to maintain their gardens.
The initiative relied on the game's mechanics, which allow players to water crops without needing explicit permission from the plot owner. Participants provided this service for free, highlighting the community's cooperative spirit during the server downtime.
