Blizzard has confirmed that the layering system in World of Warcraft: Forever will undergo significant improvements prior to its official launch. This behind-the-scenes technology manages server load by creating multiple simultaneous versions of the game world, assigning players to specific instances based on factors like language, PvP balance, and social connections.
The system is designed to improve performance in high-density areas like capital cities and reduce competition for quest objectives. Players can join the same layer as their friends by grouping up, which facilitates easier interaction and quest completion while preventing the world from feeling overly crowded.
Despite these benefits, the beta phase for WoW: Forever has faced criticism regarding the implementation of layering. Users have reported frequent, jarring transitions when crossing zone boundaries, leaving groups, or utilizing transportation like zeppelins and boats, which disrupts the sense of a persistent, cohesive world.
Blizzard acknowledged these concerns in a statement provided to GameSpot. While the developer has not detailed every specific adjustment, they confirmed that changes are currently in development to address how the game handles these layer transitions for the final release.
