Creative Assembly and Sega recently removed the Total War: Shogun 2 Complete Edition from Steam following significant player backlash regarding technical issues and the inclusion of AI-generated art. Total War vice president Roger Collum issued a formal apology, acknowledging that the release failed to meet both player and company standards.
Collum stated that the Complete Edition was not developed internally by Creative Assembly and bypassed their standard quality assurance processes. While the studio did not explicitly name the external partner, Mataboo Games is listed as a co-developer on the platform. Sega and senior developers are currently collaborating with the external team to determine future steps.
Regarding generative AI, Collum clarified that Creative Assembly prohibits the use of such tools for creating game assets or art. He noted that the studio only utilizes AI for internal support tasks like debugging, analysis, or prototyping. The company is currently investigating the specific circumstances surrounding the art found in the Complete Edition.
While the Complete Edition remains unavailable for purchase, the original version of the game has been restored to Steam. Collum also urged the community to refrain from harassing individual developers, warning that future transparency could be limited if such behavior persists.
