Fourteen years after its initial release, the action RPG Torchlight 2 is receiving technical updates via a new beta branch. Developer XD, which currently holds the rights to the series, announced these changes to modernize the title while ensuring the original version remains accessible to players who prefer their existing setups and mods.
The beta branch introduces long-awaited controller support for Windows and MacOS users. Additionally, the update addresses several crash issues, optimizes map logic to decrease loading times, and adds new anti-alias and render scale settings. The developer also confirmed that the TapTap.io requirement for online multiplayer is being removed in favor of Steam account integration, a change slated for the main branch following testing.
XD plans to implement further optimizations using AI-assisted coding tools to identify and resolve longstanding technical issues. The developer emphasized that all updates will undergo rigorous quality assurance testing to prevent new bugs. Furthermore, maintaining mod compatibility remains a primary focus, though the team noted significant uncertainty regarding potential cross-version multiplayer functionality.
PCGamesN contributor Dustin Bailey expressed cautious optimism regarding these developments. While noting that altering a classic title can be concerning, Bailey stated that the decision to keep the original version available as a separate, optional experience makes the project feel like a genuine labor of love rather than an intrusive modification.
