Electronic Arts has officially announced the closure of BioWare and the cancellation of its in-development Mass Effect title. While the decision impacts staff and fans of the studio's legacy, industry experts suggest the move aligns with the publisher's current business strategy.

Analyst Joost Van Dreunen notes that EA faces $18 billion in debt following its leveraged buyout by Saudi Arabia's PIF, Silver Lake, and Affinity. With annual interest payments of $1.8 billion surpassing the company's $1.5 billion EBITDA, Van Dreunen describes the studio closure as a predictable outcome of such a financial structure, specifically targeting smaller teams working on long-term projects.

Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analysis attributes the closure to poor commercial performance, citing that Dragon Age: The Veilguard missed sales expectations, while Anthem and Mass Effect: Andromeda were also disappointments. Harding-Rolls suggests that the studio's future was likely under review even before the acquisition was finalized due to these recurring financial struggles.

The closure marks the end of a 30-year history for the developer. Despite the studio's long-standing reputation for creating popular RPGs, the current economic environment and the necessity for cost-cutting measures have led management to terminate operations entirely.
