Netflix recently sought to expand its library of video game adaptations by pursuing an exclusive licensing agreement for Xbox intellectual property. While the streaming service already maintains a partnership with Microsoft for a Gears of War film, it aimed to secure broader rights to build additional franchises.
According to a report by journalist Matthew Belloni, Netflix proposed a $500 million offer for a seven-year exclusive license. However, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma and the company's business affairs team countered with an $800 million demand, leading Netflix to withdraw its proposal entirely.
While Netflix declined to comment on the negotiations, Microsoft stated it has seen record-breaking interest in its properties. Belloni noted that Xbox is shifting its strategy toward smaller, individual deals with various partners, including projects like a Diablo series at Netflix and a Fallout season at Prime Video.
Microsoft is also formalizing its multimedia efforts through a new division called Xbox XP. Led by Lucasfilm veteran Kayleen Walters, this arm will oversee merchandise, theme parks, and live events, while its Xbox Pictures subdivision focuses on developing film and television projects using company IP.
