A rumor originating from a Kotaku report claimed that the production cost for Gears of War: E-Day exceeded 500 million dollars, excluding marketing expenses. This figure sparked significant debate regarding the financial viability of the title, especially following projections from Alinea Analytics that estimated initial sales of 230,000 copies during the first week, generating 37 million dollars in revenue.
Industry observers and figures such as Michael Hoglund of Windows Central have firmly contested these claims. They argue that the 400 to 500 million dollar figure is a misinterpretation of the total operational costs for The Coalition studio over the past seven years, rather than the specific development budget for this single game.
The studio's operational costs cover a wide range of activities beyond this title, including the development of Gears of War: Reloaded for PS5, Gears Pop, and technical support for other Xbox Game Studios projects like Avowed. The figure represents the salary mass for approximately 300 developers over a seven-year period.
While Gears of War: E-Day has achieved the highest Metacritic rating for the franchise since the original trilogy, its commercial performance remains a subject of speculation. Microsoft leadership has not yet issued an official statement regarding these financial reports.
