Key information

GameMaker has officially announced that its next-generation runtime, known as GMRT, will be available for free commercial use starting January 1, 2027. This initiative aims to increase accessibility for independent game creators.

Under this updated model, developers gain the ability to build and distribute titles across mobile, web, desktop, and GX Games platforms without needing a professional license. Additionally, the company is providing source code access across all tiers.

While the licensing structure for GMRT is changing, GameMaker confirmed that existing tier pricing remains unchanged. Users with a professional license retain the right to distribute games created with the current GMS2 runtime, now with the added benefit of GMS2 source code access.

Despite these broader access changes, specific limitations persist for console development. GameMaker clarified that developers must still hold an enterprise license and maintain approved developer status to export their projects to consoles, regardless of which runtime they utilize.
