Key information

Remedy Entertainment has clarified the nature of The Board, an otherworldly entity featured in Control Resonant. While players often speculate about the specific meaning behind its vocalizations, audio lead Lucas Pierrot confirmed that the character speaks intentional gibberish rather than a coherent language.

The audio design relies on a psychological trick where listeners project their own interpretations onto the sounds. Pierrot noted that this approach allows players to perceive praise, disdain, or other emotions based on their personal experiences during gameplay, such as performing an execution.

To maintain a sense of intelligence, the developers implemented a partial language structure. This is governed by a rhythmic technique called the pulse, which uses a low, soft kick to provide punctuation and flow, helping the entity sound unsettling, scary, or occasionally humorous.

Since the game's release in September, Remedy has provided ongoing updates to refine the experience. The Board remains a central, mysterious presence as players navigate the game's version of Manhattan.
