Housemarque and Nixxes collaborated on the development of Saros, focusing on the creation of the game's boss encounters. Housemarque provided the creative vision, combat mechanics, and visual concepts, while Nixxes handled technical design, animations, and environmental implementation. This partnership aimed to deliver spectacular action sequences consistent with Housemarque's signature style on PlayStation.

Boss battles in Saros are structured around three unique phases, each designed to alter the combat experience and visual identity of the encounter. These fights typically last between three and eight minutes, challenging players through environmental hazards, varied attack patterns, and boss behaviors. Mechanics emphasize strategic movement, requiring players to utilize shields, jumps, and dodges rather than relying on desperate reactions.

The design process prioritized fairness, ensuring that players understand the reasons for defeat and feel encouraged to retry. Specific bosses like The Architect force players to navigate crumbling environments using a grappling hook, while The Pastor utilizes tentacles to restrict movement space on a ship. The Priestess encounter incorporates surreal illusions and platforming, whereas the final boss, The King, focuses on raw player skill and narrative intensity.

Beyond the main game, the upcoming Saros: Zenith will feature a new mode called Supreme Lance. This addition is designed to provide a more direct, agile, and replayable experience, allowing players to revisit these boss encounters and compete for high scores.
