Freelance illustrator and systems engineer Hiraji released the free browser game Factory Go on October 21. The title reimagines the traditional game of Go with a steampunk aesthetic, aiming to make the rules more accessible to beginners by framing the placement of stones as building factories.
The game translates core Go mechanics into industrial concepts. Surrounding an opponent's stone is depicted as blocking a factory's exhaust vents, causing it to explode. Furthermore, connecting factories to form two distinct areas creates an indestructible large factory, a thematic representation of the two-eyes rule in standard Go.
Social media users and professional player Yukari Yoshihara have praised the game for its intuitive design, noting that it helps players grasp the concept of territory. However, the game deviates from standard Japanese rules; it lacks a dead stone judgment system, requiring players to remove captured pieces manually, and determines the winner based on the total number of factories built.
Factory Go supports 9x9, 13x13, and 19x19 boards, featuring four CPU difficulty levels and local multiplayer. The interface displays the total number of active factories for both players to clarify the current state of the match, and the game automatically fills territory at the end, with a 7.5-point komi provided to the second player.
