Key information
Nineteen years after Half-Life 2: Episode 2, speculation regarding a potential Half-Life 3 continues to circulate. Recent interest was reignited when a Valve developer inadvertently mentioned the project codename "HLX" during a public GameSoundCon Q&A panel.
During the panel, music designer Mike Morasky discussed audio technology across various titles, stating that "HLX has its own version" of HDR before trailing off. Following this, sound designer David Feise whispered "nice work" to him, an interaction interpreted by some as sarcastic.
Dataminers first identified the "HLX" codename in 2021. While Valve previously abandoned Half-Life 2: Episode 3 and a separate sequel attempt around 2013/2014 due to engine limitations, recent findings from insider Tyler McVicker suggest a fully-fledged project remains in development.
While the mention confirms HLX is an active, standalone project requiring audio work, it remains unclear if this relates directly to the long-rumoured Half-Life 3. Previous fan predictions regarding a 2024 release window did not materialize, leaving the project's status and eventual launch date uncertain.
