The Project Zomboid community has recently seen the emergence of first-person perspective mods, including First Person View, Project Viewpoint, and pz3d. While The Indie Stone encourages creative experimentation, the developer has issued a formal statement clarifying that it cannot provide official support for these modifications.
While the earlier First Person View mod utilizes the game's standard Lua framework, newer entries like Project Viewpoint and pz3d are built using Java. This allows them to make fundamental changes to the game's source code, necessitating the use of a third-party tool called Zombie Buddy to install them outside of the Steam Workshop.
The Indie Stone warns that Java-based mods require a higher level of trust because they allow third-party code to run on a user's machine. The developer notes that these mods are likely to break whenever the core game receives an update, as they rely on internal code that changes during development. Consequently, the studio cannot offer technical support or security protections for these specific add-ons.
To mitigate potential risks, the developer advises players to prioritize open-source mods that allow for build reproduction. The studio emphasizes that its policy is not a judgment on creators, but rather a necessary clarification of the limitations regarding official support and the inherent risks of installing external code.
