Electronic Arts has officially announced the closure of the BioWare studio, a decision resulting in approximately 400 job losses. This move also includes the cancellation of the upcoming entry in the Mass Effect series.

The studio's closure follows a period of financial pressure for Electronic Arts, which was acquired by an investment group led by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia for 55 billion dollars. The company is currently managing 18 billion dollars in debt and has implemented a plan to save 700 million dollars, rendering the studio unsustainable under current management.

According to former executive Mark Darrah, Electronic Arts now faces two primary options for the Mass Effect and Dragon Age intellectual properties: keeping them dormant or selling the licenses to other developers. This potential sale is viewed as a possible path for the franchises to be handled by studios with greater competence and passion.

While the game development ends, the Mass Effect universe will continue through an Amazon Prime Video television series set after the original trilogy. Electronic Arts intends to shift its focus toward profitable titles, including Star Wars Jedi 3, Marvel's Iron Man, Apex Legends, Battlefield, and its sports portfolio.
