Epic Games has modified the participation requirements for the upcoming 2026 Epic AI MegaJam, scheduled for mid-November. The event, which offers 50,000 dollars in prizes, initially mandated the use of generative artificial intelligence tools for all participants. Following significant public criticism on social media, the company clarified that the use of such technology is now optional.
The competition challenges developers to build projects using Unreal Engine or Unreal Editor for Fortnite. While the event previously encouraged AI integration to assist with prototyping and artistic styles, the updated guidelines confirm that participants may now utilize as little or as much AI as they prefer. Epic Games acknowledged that the original requirement was a mistake.
The initial announcement faced intense backlash from users who expressed strong opposition to the mandatory inclusion of generative AI. Critics labeled the technology a destructive force, with some participants questioning the company's direction. This controversy reflects broader industry tensions, as players and developers continue to debate the role of AI-generated content in gaming, which has already become a point of contention on platforms like Steam.
Despite the rule change, the event continues to highlight potential collaborations with various technology firms, including Anthropic, Google, Meshy, OpenAI, and SpaceXSI. The theme for the game jam will be revealed shortly before the event begins in November 2026.
