Epic Games has officially walked back a requirement that participants in its upcoming MegaJam must utilize artificial intelligence tools. The company acknowledged the initial FAQ mandate was a mistake, clarifying that developers are now free to use as little or as much AI as they choose.
The 2026 Epic AI MegaJam is scheduled to begin on November 12, following the reveal of the event theme on November 11. Participants have until November 15 to complete their projects, with some developers working in-person at a San Francisco venue.
The competition offers significant financial incentives, including $7,500 for winners in three categories and additional prizes for runners-up. Furthermore, Epic is offering Development Continuation Grants of up to $50,000 per team to support ongoing work.
This event aligns with CEO Tim Sweeney's broader strategy to pivot toward AI-first development. While Sweeney encourages developers to embrace these tools for maximum acceleration, the announcement faced criticism from some community members who questioned the necessity of AI for rapid prototyping.
