Key information
Asus has released the ROG Rapture GT-BN98 Pro, marketed as the first Wi-Fi 8 router. While official ratification for the 802.11bn standard is expected in late 2028, this device aims to prioritize signal reliability and robust uploading over raw speed, particularly in crowded environments or at greater distances.
The router features advanced technologies like Unequal Modulation for smoother performance drop-off at range, and Enhanced Long Range to support low-powered devices. Additionally, Multi-AP Coexistence features allow neighboring routers to coordinate channel usage and transmission power, reducing interference in dense areas.
In testing, the reviewer noted the GT-BN98 Pro is not the fastest router at close range compared to mature Wi-Fi 7 models. However, it demonstrated superior performance at distance and maintained stability on busy networks. The reviewer praised the extensive, subscription-free security and gaming features, though noted the $999 (£790) price point is significant.
Hardware specifications include a quad-core CPU with NPU, two 10 Gbps ports, and quad-band 24.4 Gbps wireless speed. While it currently lacks the raw speed of established Wi-Fi 7 competitors, the GT-BN98 Pro represents an early, functional implementation of Wi-Fi 8 technology.
