Sony has officially discontinued its last standalone Ultra HD Blu-ray player, the UBP-X700/K, in Japan. According to the Japanese blog Kunkoku, the company ceased shipments of the device on October 22. This move follows the earlier discontinuation of the UBP-X800M2 model and the end of Blu-ray recorder sales.
The UBP-X700/K is currently listed as out of stock on the official Japanese online store with no plans for replenishment or a successor. While the player was released in May 2025, its removal marks a significant shift in Sony's hardware strategy regarding physical media playback.
Following this decision, the PlayStation 5 remains the sole Sony device capable of playing Ultra HD Blu-ray discs in Japan. However, the console is primarily designed for gaming and lacks support for Dolby Vision, which may limit its utility for dedicated home cinema enthusiasts compared to specialized players.
These changes are currently specific to the Japanese market, as the UBP-X700/K has not yet been officially marked as discontinued in the United States or Europe. Meanwhile, Panasonic remains the only major electronics manufacturer continuing to produce and sell standalone Ultra HD Blu-ray players.
