Key information
Sony has officially ceased production of its last remaining standalone Blu-ray player, the UBP-X700/K, in Japan. This move signals the company's strategic shift toward a fully digital ecosystem, moving away from physical media formats that the manufacturer once championed.
The UBP-X700/K model, which only launched in May of this year, is now listed as sold out on the official Sony website with no plans for restocking. The company has not announced any successor products, effectively marking its exit from the independent Blu-ray player market.
This decision reflects a broader trend as consumer demand for physical discs continues to decline. Sony has already begun reducing physical media support within its gaming division, notably by transitioning to optional, detachable disc drives for the PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro consoles.
While the standard PS5 remains the only Sony hardware with a native disc drive, industry speculation suggests that future consoles like the potential PS6 might abandon physical media support entirely. Currently, Panasonic remains one of the few major brands still manufacturing Blu-ray players.
