Shigeru Miyamoto, a legendary figure within Nintendo and the Japanese gaming industry, has been honored with the Order of Culture by the Japanese government. This marks the first time a video game creator has received this prestigious distinction.

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology announced the selection on October 22, 2026. This award recognizes individuals who have made particularly notable contributions to the development of culture, a tradition dating back to 1937.

Upon accepting the honor, Miyamoto emphasized that video games are a collaborative effort rather than a solitary pursuit. He expressed that the award reflects the collective work of many people involved in the industry.

Miyamoto noted that this recognition highlights the widespread popularity of video games as a form of entertainment. Since joining Nintendo in 1977, he has developed numerous globally beloved franchises that have remained active for decades.
