Key information

Following the emergence of a trailer for Mass Effect: Universe, former BioWare developer Tony de Waal shared details regarding a cancelled fifth entry in the Mass Effect series. De Waal expressed regret that players will not experience this project, which had been in development at the studio.

The development team aimed to elevate the franchise by incorporating a level of player autonomy and choice that the developer claimed no other game had matched. The project sought to evolve the series while remaining faithful to the original trilogy.

According to de Waal, the team drew significant inspiration from the work of Larian Studios and CD Projekt Red. Specifically, the developers looked toward the recent titles Baldur’s Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 as benchmarks for the direction they intended to take the new Mass Effect game.

De Waal praised the group of talented developers who were working to create something special before the project was cancelled. BioWare recently released Dragon Age: The Veilguard in October 2024, marking the studio's latest title five years after the launch of Anthem.
