An internal trailer for the cancelled project Mass Effect Universe has surfaced online following the closure of BioWare. While initial skepticism regarding the footage's authenticity existed due to AI concerns, IGN and journalist Jason Schreier have confirmed the video is genuine.

The footage, intended for EA leadership, showcases a new protagonist navigating the galaxy with a diverse crew. Gameplay segments feature gunplay, biotics, and a cameo from Liara. The project aimed to offer unprecedented player autonomy and choice, drawing inspiration from titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and The Witcher while remaining faithful to the original trilogy.

The cancellation follows EA's recent layoffs, which impacted 400 employees, including the 50 developers assigned to this title. Industry reactions have been largely bittersweet, with fans expressing frustration and sadness over the loss of a concept described as a potential spy thriller.

These job cuts affected multiple EA-owned studios, including Respawn and Maxis, occurring shortly after a $55bn leveraged buyout. Although experts anticipated these reductions due to debt obligations, the closure of BioWare has prompted significant industry-wide discourse.
