Electronic Arts has ordered the closure of BioWare, resulting in the cancellation of the project previously known as Mass Effect 5. Following this decision, an anonymous employee leaked a trailer for the game, which was originally announced in November 2020 under the title Mass Effect: Universe.
The leaked footage features recognizable elements such as the N7 branding, specific music, and characters, while notably excluding Shepard. Journalist Jason Schreier has confirmed the authenticity of the material, supporting the view that the project was legitimate.
The leak aims to demonstrate that the game's development was further along than previously suggested during the studio's closure. This is corroborated by science fiction author Derek Künsken, who revealed he served as a senior writer for the project over the past five years.
The release of this footage stems from the frustration and sadness felt by former staff members regarding the studio's shutdown. Unless an unexpected change occurs, this trailer serves as the only public look at a title that will likely never be released.
