Recent jailbreak activities on the PlayStation 5 have revealed that the console possesses the technical capacity to read and emulate PS2 and PS3 games locally. By exploiting firmware vulnerabilities, developers have demonstrated that the hardware can process original game discs directly, contradicting long-standing claims regarding the console's limitations.
The project PS5SX2, a port of the PCSX2 emulator, allows the PS5 to read PS2 DVD structures directly. The console's AMD graphics processor can upscale these titles to 4K resolution at 60 frames per second with high-definition texture support. Similarly, adaptations of the RPCS3 emulator have enabled local execution of PS3 Blu-ray discs, challenging the official narrative that the PS3's Cell processor was too complex to emulate.
While the console's optical drive reads PS2 and PS3 media, it cannot read CD-ROMs due to laser wavelength limitations. Modders have bypassed this by connecting external USB drives. These findings suggest that the absence of native backward compatibility is a deliberate software restriction rather than a hardware failure.
The report attributes this software locking to Sony's financial strategy, which prioritizes digital sales and subscription services over physical media. By restricting local disc support, the company encourages users to purchase digital re-releases or subscribe to PlayStation Plus, a move that critics argue undermines the physical game market.
