A user on X known as pepsipu claims to have successfully jailbroken the Nintendo Switch 2. To demonstrate this, the user shared video footage showing third-party characters, such as Peter Griffin and Hatsune Miku, being played within Mario Kart.
The jailbreak utilizes a userland exploit discovered in July. By leveraging generative AI tools like OpenAI Codex, the user identified methods to seize system privileges through specific backward-compatible games. While finding such vulnerabilities typically requires years, the AI-assisted process was completed in just two weeks.
This exploit is temporary, as the system resets upon power-off, requiring the full process to be repeated. Furthermore, the procedure is complex for average users, and Nintendo could potentially mitigate the issue by patching the specific games used to facilitate the breach.
Console jailbreaking involves bypassing security restrictions to gain administrative access. While this allows for modding, it is frequently misused for piracy. This incident highlights the growing threat of AI-driven hacking, prompting calls for the gaming industry to strengthen security measures against such advanced exploitation techniques.
